Synthetic fiber pillows come in a variety of styles, are highly fluffy, and are relatively affordable. Re Pillow Co., founded by the third generation of a bedding family and a local brand, has pillows whose fillings are all made of synthetic fibers. "If you want to achieve the feel of a down pillow without incurring such high costs, you can achieve a similar effect by adjusting the coarseness and shape of the synthetic fibers," he explained.
The shape of synthetic fiber materials affects the support and fluffiness of a pillow. Liang Liheng gave an example: strip-shaped materials are very fluffy and feel very soft and comfortable to sleep on, but they have poor resilience and are prone to flattening after long-term pressure. Spherical or hollow tube-shaped materials have higher elasticity and will bounce back like a slingshot when pressed, but the fiber size is relatively large and may not provide the same close fit as strip-shaped materials. Manufacturers will choose to use a single or a combination of the two shapes depending on the desired effect.
