Re Cover

At the end of 2023, just few months after Re Bedding was launched, some customers started to ask if we’re selling any duvet covers. We’re already selling Bedsheets and pillow cases, so what about duvet covers? In fact, if we launch a normal duvet cover which could be sold as a set together with Re Bedding and Re Pillow, we definitely can earn more and customers would love the convenience of buying everything in a set. But this is not what I want. I want to make a duvet cover that’s easy to change as well. 

I think this is against our belief of being responsible for what we produce if we gave up providing the best thing for our customers and randomly launch a normal duvet cover just because it’s easier and more profitable. 

What’s the difference between Re Pillow Co and  some other bedding companies if we are not aiming for excellence anymore?

I have to say this is not an easy decision, cause lots of customers love to have their beddings in a whole matched set. If we don’t have any duvets, it would affect our sales performance for Re Bedding as well. Moving forward, we still need funds for our productions and operations. That’s why at this point I’m facing a dilemma - should we just release a normal duvet cover or wait until we’ve investigated something that’s easy to change and happy to release?

At last I’ve chosen the latter. Business is important but sticking to our beliefs and being responsible to our customers is something that should go first no matter what. 

After a year, we successfully made a duvet cover that we want - Re Cover.

When I’m designing Re Cover, I’ve thought about all sorts of possibilities, there are so many examples of companies designing new stuff just for the sake of being a pioneer in the industry, but ended up to be designs that’s not user-friendly at all. We only want to make something that benefits our customers the most but not creating new and useless designs. So now let’s get to the point:

We normally see openings of duvet covers at the sides and most of them are zipped with buttons or zippers. When you change your duvet cover, you’ll need to tuck the duvet in and out of the opening and make sure all the corners and sides of the duvet are in place. 

Cause the sizes of duvet and duvet covers are normally quite big and you’ll need to reach inside the duvet cover during the whole process, it is demanding and tiring, especially for kids and elderlies.

If there’s a problem, you’ll have to solve it. A very straightforward method is to make the opening bigger, from a single side opening to two sides or even three sides, like a ‘L shape’ / ‘U shape’ - which looks like:

With such a big opening, if we use buttons for closing, it’ll be even harder, so we have to use either hook and loop fasteners or zipper.

The thing with hook and loop fasteners is, after years of using, it’ll be trapped with dust and would not work as well. So what about zippers? Zippers can perfectly fit on and we’ve discussed with YKK Japan about our design - we’ll need something long, sturdy and able to turn around the corners which would make the sides of our duvet tougher.

Unlike Re Bedding, which uses tougher zippers just to make it both smooth and sturdy but as zippers are placed along the sides of bedding, it will not affect user experience.

Duvet covers are something that directly goes on top of skin, it’s not ideal if it’s too tough, I must think of something else.

What if the opening is in the middle? Then you can tuck the duvet in and out from the middle, which basically half the length that you'll need to keep your hands inside the duvet cover and make changing much easier. Cause there won’t be any corners and the length would be shorter in the middle, we could use softer and narrower zippers, making sure it’s 100% comfortable. Although this design is already better than current ones, the whole process would still need to be done right inside the duvet cover, and you would not be able to directly see and align the corners of the duvet and duvet cover, this is still not the best option. 

After all the trial and error, we finally find the best solution - Re Cover:

Re Cover uses a double opening design, which could replace current designs of single opening. Both openings are at the end of each side, which pretty much looks like a tunnel, making it easier to change. 

When changing your duvet cover, all you need to do is have your duvet in one of your hands and Re Cover in the other, tuck it straight in and through, then check all 4 corners are in place.

Now that changing duvet cover becomes so easy and stress-free, it’ll never be your worst nightmare anymore. 

With the double opening on each side, 4 corners of the duvet could be exposed out of the cover which make aligning and positioning much easier.

This saves you from searching your duvet inside the cover or even tucking your head inside looking for the corners and ending up with a mess.

With Re Cover, all these troubles will stay in the past.

There are some details about the design of Re Cover eg. the openings are on the short sides instead of long sides which is better for changing - though I’ve thought of keeping it on the longer sides to make it more stylish, this would make changing harder which is definitely not ideal. I don’t want this to become a gimmick, I want something that’s 100% benefiting our customers. 

Another thing is - the zipper opening of Re Cover is not right on the edge of sides, instead, it’s slightly moved inwards, just a bit away from the edge to reduce the possibility of the zipper scratching your neck, providing the best possible comfort.

We have chosen softer zippers and sewed it on the inner side (please don’t worry, the zipper handle is still on the outside), the rough side of the zipper faces inwards and there’s a fabric covering so the outer side would be all smooth, just to avoid discomfort due to the zippers. It’s made of soft and breathable material, making sure you enjoy the best sleep. The smallest details matter. 

Going through every tiniest thing, just to make the best duvet cover.

No one wants their duvet to move all around inside the cover. Re Cover has a 8-spot-tying system, except the regular 4-spot-tying on all 4 corners, we added 4 extra spots in the middle of each side, which is compatible with our Re Quilt and Re Fleece series, and no matter what brand of duvet you’re using (eg.4-spot, 6-spot, or 8-spot), it’s definitely compatible with Re Cover.

All four sides of Re Cover used the double stitched seam method, and that’s why the finish of all sides are straight and clear, cosmetically looking neater and more durable even after loads of washing. It doubles the production time compared to single stitched seam and requires better sewing techniques but the result is worth it.

After bringing up Re Pillow Co. for few years, I am still who I am, but there’s no denying that my mindset has changed. When we first start, I just do whatever I think is worth trying, cause no one has expectations on me and Re Pillow Co. and there’s no pressure on trying. Some of the design details were not thought as thorough as now. 

Although we’re still a small company, I am glad that we start to receive lovely feedback and emails saying how much they enjoyed our product, which make me thing that all the hard work had paid off. We might have never met, but Re Pillow Co. has built some sort of connections between us. 

During the process of making Re Cover, because of all the lovely words we receive from Re Bedding, we do have a bit more pressure to not let everyone down. And this is why I kept thinking over and over on each single detail to make sure I didn’t miss anything. This is the power of pressure that could make us grow. 

Re Cover would be the last product in our bedding series, we’ve now launched pillow, quilt, bedsheet. pillowcase and duvet cover. I know it’s a long wait for Re Cover, but it’s definitely worth all the waiting because we’ve made something that’s genuinely good for everyone. Finally, we over-fulfilled our last mission.
