Re Cover Re Cover

Rewind to late 2023. A month or two after the Re Bedding were released, we started receiving inquiries from customers asking why we didn't sell duvet covers. Why do we have bed sheets and pillowcases, but no duvet covers? In fact, it would be easy to release a regular duvet cover so that customers could purchase it as a matching set with the Re Bedding, which would boost sales and satisfy customers. Of course, that's an option, but it's not what I wanted. What I envisioned was an easy-to-change duvet cover, one that even a single person could put on quickly. That's the duvet cover I wanted to make.

If we were to just release a matching regular duvet cover, I feel that to some extent we would be abandoning our dedication, abandoning the commitment to put our best effort into every product before releasing it.

If we did that, how would we be different from others out there?

This was a difficult decision, because many customers prefer their bedding to be a matching set. If we didn't have duvet covers, only bed sheets and pillowcases, sales of the Re Bedding would be affected. Research and production also have costs, and we needed that capital to operate and continue developing future products. So I faced a dilemma—should I release a regular duvet cover first, or would it be better not to release one until I had truly created this easy-to-change, new-style duvet cover?

Ultimately, I chose the latter. Business is important, but I believe releasing a product only after it's been done well is being true to myself and honoring the trust our customers have always placed in us.

After nearly a year, this easy-change duvet cover is officially here. Let me introduce: Re Cover.

When designing the new Re Cover duvet cover, I carefully considered various options. I've seen many companies "innovate for the sake of innovation" because they feel a "need to innovate," and we learned from their experiences.

Everything must start from the user's perspective, returning to the original intention of making bedding: to improve lives through good products, not to change things for the sake of changing them. Let's begin the introduction:

Current duvet cover designs generally feature an opening at the bottom or side, usually sealed with buttons or a zipper. When changing the duvet cover, the user inserts or removes the duvet insert through this opening. While inserting the duvet insert, the user must align it with the duvet cover inside the cover, ensuring all four corners are correctly positioned.

Due to the large size of duvets and duvet covers, and because the entire alignment process requires reaching inside the duvet cover, changing the duvet cover can be difficult and strenuous. This is especially true for the elderly and children, who may not be able to easily change duvet covers themselves.

When there's a problem, you solve it. One very intuitive idea is to enlarge the opening of the duvet cover, from having an opening on only one side to having openings on two or even three sides, opening up in an "L-shape" or "U-shape", similar to the image below:

Since the duvet cover has such a large opening, using buttons to close it would be too "messy" and unsuitable. Therefore, hook-and-loop fasteners or zippers should be used to close it.

Hook-and-loop fasteners are not ideal as the 'fluff' will gradually wear out and become less durable after repeated use. So, what about zippers? Zippers can provide a snug and perfect seal. We also discussed this duvet cover design with our Japanese YKK zipper colleagues. Because the zipper needs to be of a certain length and have a 90-degree turn, using a thicker and more robust zipper style would be more durable. However, the downside is that the edges of the duvet cover would be harder, especially at the corners.

Unlike Re Bedding, we can use more durable zippers on Re Bedding because the zipper is attached to the mattress's corners, and even if the zipper is thick and the corners are hard, it won't affect the daily user experience.

However, duvet covers are meant for sleeping with on your body, so any hard objects would be less than ideal. Therefore, I need to rethink this.

So, I also considered putting the duvet cover's opening in the middle, allowing the user to insert and remove the duvet insert from the center, thus halving the distance their hands need to reach inside the duvet cover. This would be more convenient than designs with an opening along one edge. And because the zipper would have no corners and be shorter, it would be possible to use thinner and softer zipper models, greatly reducing the impact on the comfort of using the duvet cover. Although this duvet cover design would be easier to change than current duvet covers, the entire process of aligning the duvet cover and insert would still take place inside the duvet cover. Users would not be able to align the corners of the duvet cover and insert within arm's reach and sight, so it still wouldn't be truly convenient.

After continuous trials, I finally found a solution. Let me introduce, Re Cover, the Re Cover:

Re Cover The Re Cover features a dual-opening design. As mentioned, most duvet covers on the market today have only one opening for inserting the duvet. Our invented duvet cover, however, will have two openings, with the second opening located opposite the existing one. Therefore, with this duvet cover design, when both openings are unzipped, the cover forms a tunnel-like shape, making duvet changes easier and more convenient.

When changing the duvet cover, the user can hold the duvet with one hand and the "duvet cover tunnel" with the other, threading the duvet through the cover in one swift motion, exiting through the opposite opening. Then, simply lay it flat and align it.

Changing duvet covers will be easier, faster, and more convenient. As we say in Cantonese, "Once you've used it, you can't go back."

Since the duvet cover has openings at both ends, all four corners of the duvet are visible when the user aligns the duvet insert with the cover.

This makes aligning the duvet cover and duvet much easier than with current duvet covers on the market. With current duvet cover designs, the alignment process between the duvet and duvet cover takes place inside the duvet cover, requiring users to either reach inside and feel around without seeing, or stick their entire head inside the duvet cover to align it. Both methods of changing duvet covers are difficult and inconvenient.

With the new Re Cover duvet cover, all these problems will be a thing of the past.

Re Cover also meticulously considered the details of the Re Cover, such as the opening. To facilitate changing the duvet cover, the opening is positioned at the "top and bottom" of the duvet rather than the left and right ends. This is because the duvet's length is greater than its width, making it easier to insert and replace the duvet insert with this opening placement. I once considered placing the opening on the left and right sides because it felt more aesthetically pleasing, but after testing, it significantly compromised user convenience. The function became more of a gimmick, which was not what I intended, so I abandoned that idea. The most important thing is to truly allow users to experience convenience.

While convenience is important, comfort must also be considered. For example, if you look closely, the zipper opening of the duvet cover is specially designed not to be directly flush with the edge of the duvet cover, but slightly set inward, leaving a certain distance from the edge of the duvet cover. This reduces the possibility of uncomfortable scratching on the neck, minimizing the impact on the sleep experience.

In addition, we specifically chose a softer zipper and sewed it in reverse (don't worry, the zipper pull is still on the outside). All the protruding parts of the duvet cover zipper face inwards, leaving a smooth outer surface, further enhanced with a fabric flap design to minimize any potential impact of the zipper on the user experience. At the same time, we selected a soft, comfortable, and breathable duvet cover material, significantly improving sleep quality. Every detail matters.

Such meticulous consideration is all for the sake of making a good duvet cover.

Nobody likes their duvet to shift inside the duvet cover. The new Re Cover duvet cover features an 8-point tie-down system. In addition to ties at all four corners, there are also ties at the midpoint of each side. This allows it to be secured to the corner loops of the Re Quilt and Re Fleece series. Even when using duvet inserts from other bedding brands, whether they have 4-point, 6-point, or 8-point loop systems, there will always be corner ties available to secure them.

Re Cover's Re Covers feature a double-needle stitching method on all four sides, which takes almost twice as long to produce as single-stitch duvet covers and requires higher craftsmanship. However, the result is perfectly straight edges, clean lines, and a duvet cover that looks more structured and appealing. Furthermore, the double-needle stitching makes the seams much stronger, offering superior washability and durability compared to duvet covers from other bedding brands.

Having run Re Pillow Co. for several years, I am still myself, but there's no denying that my mindset has changed. In the early days, I felt unburdened. Customers had no expectations of this unknown young man and his small brand, Re Pillow Co., so I was very bold in my approach. The design and details of the bedding were not as thoroughly considered as they are now.

Although, to be frank, the scale is still small and brand awareness is not high, I am fortunate to receive messages and emails from customers praising the products. This makes me feel that somewhere far away, someone is using my products. Although we may have never met, in my heart, we are connected.

When making this new Re Cover duvet cover, perhaps because the new sheets were also well-received by customers, the pressure during the production of the duvet cover was greater than before. Therefore, the considerations for this duvet cover design were even more meticulous and detailed. This kind of pressure, I suppose, is growth.

The Re Cover Re Cover is the last product in the bedding category. With its launch, we have now completed pillows, quilts, sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers. Although this Re Cover took a long time, the wait was worth it. We have truly perfected the duvet cover, finally, overachieving on this final mission.
